Shotokusan Honkyuji Temple in Gyotoku

Shotokusan Honkyuji Temple has a statue of the founder Nichiren called the guardian deity for preventing eye diseases, and the temple is a branch temple of Nakayama Hokekyouji Temple, the grand head temple of Nichiren Sect and it was built in 1572. Honkyuji Temple dedicates Ito Ryoson (a pagoda and two statues of Buddha) as its principle images. And the statue of the founder Nichiren carved by the venerable Hossu Gyogakuin Niccho called the guardian deity for preventing eye disease is also precious property for Nichiren Sect. Moreover, there is a biography of Nichiren carving on ranma (wooden panels on the beams) in the main hall.

The History of Shotokusan Honkyuji Temple

Shotokusan Honkyuji Temple was built in 1572 by the venerable Zuiunin Nichigyo, the 13th abbot of Nakayama Hokekyoji Temple of Nichiren Sect. The specific information of the temple has lost in the Tsunami in 1917. The main hall was built in 1995 as the 750 anniversary project of founding Nichiren Sect.

The statue of the founder Nichiren in Shokakusan Honkyuji Temple actually repaired, and it was carved by the venerable Gyogakuin Niccho, the 11th abbot of Minobusan Kuoanji Temple, the Head Temple of Nichiren Sect. This statue has been called the founder Nichiren of the guardian deity for preventing eye disease.
There is Ranma panels carved the biography of the founder Nichiren on hanged on the main hall.

August 24rd : Osegakie (a mass for lost souls)
November 24th : Okaishiki (a memorial service for the Founder Nichiren)

  • From Narita International Airport, take JR Sobu-express line, transfer the line at Nishi-funabashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nakano or Mitaka, get off Myoden Sta. And also take Keisei-line, transfer the line at Funabashi to Sobu-Local line, and transfer the line at Nishi-funabashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nakano or Mitaka, get off Myoden Sta.   • From Akihabara Sta, take Sobu line bound to Chiba, Tsudanuma or Nishi Funabashi, transfer the line at Nishifunabashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro, get off Myoden Sta.
