Shokokusan Myouoji Temple and Shichifukujin
Over Takumibori and going east along Teramachidori Street, the Seven Deities
or Seven Gods of Good Fortune called
Shichifukujin welcome visitors warmly
in
Shoukokusan Myouoji Temple on the right. The statues of the Seven Deities
stand on the right of the approach road, they look like holding a meeting
there. They might give something good fortune when visitors offer prayers.

The History of Myouoji Temple
Shokokusan Myouoji Temple was built by the venerable Rinzoin Nichinin
in 1559. It is a branch temple of Nakayama Hokekyoji Temple. The principle
image is the statue of Buddha (Shaka Nyorai).
The Events and Landmarks in Myouoji Temple
Myouoji Temple is famous for
Kishibojin (Hariti; the goddess of childbirth and children)in Gyotoku. And it dedicates a statue of Knzeon Bosatsu for the spirits of miscarried children.
Moreover, the statues of Seven Gods called Shichifukujin are dedicated
in Myouoji Temple, so visitors could offer prayer for all the Seven Gods
once.
The Seven Gods are Ebisuten, Daikokuten,
Bishamonten,
Benzaiten, Hoteison, Hukurokuju and Jurojin.
There is also a charnel house for the spirits of dogs and cats built in
the temple.

The Stone Tablet of Shichifukujin
These statues of Shichifukujin (the Seven Gods of Good Fortune) were built
to expeling evil spirits, purifying and cleasing any unlucky things and
souls by Nssei Uchida, the 39th chief priests of Shokokusan Myouoji Temple,
in August of 1983.
May 1st of 2003, Visiting Shichifukujin in Ichikawa City including Fukurokuju
and Jurojin started.
By Myouoji Temple in January 1st of 2004.

Shichifukuji is the Seven Gods of Good Fortun, Daikokuten, Bishamonten,
Ebisuten, Jurojin, Hukurokuju, Benzaiten and Hoteison are members of the
gods. Generally, they are painted as on a ship loaded with full of treasures.
The worship all gods of Shichifukujin began in late
Muromachi period, since the ideas that accumulating wealth would be right conduct spread
among the society, Daikokuten, Bishamonten and Benzaiten are the guardian
deities of Buddhism and Ebisuten is the god of folk beliefs, those gods
were fixed into the holy number '7'. The worship Shichifukujin also spread
in the society deeply. Especially merchants faithfully believed as the
gods giving virtue, happiness, wealth and prosperity. Moreover, according
to the ideas of 'Shichi Nan Soku Metsu (seven misfortunes disappear soon)
and Shichi Fuku Soku Shou (seven fortune appear soon), people avoid the
seven misfortunes and are given the seven fortunes when they believe Shichifukujin.

Shokokusan Myouoji Temple
- Shokokusan Myouoji Temple has a great accessibility from both Narita and Haneda International
Airport.
- From Narita International Airport, take JR Sobu-express line, transfer
the line at Nishi-funabashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nakano
or Mitaka, get off Myoden Sta. And also take Keisei-line, transfer the
line at Funabashi to Sobu-Local line, and transfer the line at Nishi-funabashi
to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nakano or Mitaka, get off Myoden
Sta. It takes minimally 60 minutes from Narita Airport.
- From Haneda International Airport, take Keikyu-line bound to Narita, transfer
the line at Nihonbashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nishifunabashi,
Tsudanuma or Katsutadai, get off Myoden Sta.
- From Tokyo (Otemachi) Sta, take Tozai line of Tokyo Metro bound to Nishi-funabashi,
Tsudanuma or Katsutadai, get off Myoden Sta.
- From Akihabara Sta, take Sobu line bound to Chiba, Tsudanuma or Nishi Funabashi,
transfer the line at Nishifunabashi to Tozai line of Tokyo Metro, get off
Myoden Sta.
- Take 8 minute walk from Myoden Sta.
