Mie Prefecture / The Summary of Mie-ken

Mie Prefecture is located on east side of the Kii Peninsula the biggest peninsula in Japan. The prefectural government is in Tsu City. Mie Prefecture was organized by 4 provinces registered the Ritsuryo Reform in 645 such as Ise, Shima, Iga and a part of Kii Province (First the area is called Kumano Province). It has been developed as the shrine town of Ise Jingu since Edo Period.
Mie Prefecture has a lot of resources in the nature, therefore agriculture and fishery are prosperous, and also tourism energetically flourishes. Ise Jingu, the most famous, popular and important shrine for Japanese people, Iga Ueno famous for Iga Ninja, Kumano Kodo, the world heritage and Suzuka Circuit are all in Mie Prefecture, then several millions of tourists visit there every year.

The Shor Summary of History of Mie Prefecture

People lived in Mie Prefecture before Jomon ages there are many remains of pre-historic ages along Ise Bay, in Shima Peninsula and in Iga Valley.

In 672, the Jinshin War occurred to gain the leading power of the government, the powerful clans in the region of Mie prefecture now played important role on the conflicts.

In Middle Ages, before Segaku Period (the Warring States Period), Kitabatake Clan controlled the central part of Ise Province, Kanbe Clan controlled north- western region and Kuki Clan controlled Shima Province, so there were no powerful clan in Iga Province.

In 1568, Nobunaga Oda, the most popular Sengoku Busho, invaded northern part of Ise Province, he sent his third son, Nobutaka to be adopted into the Kanbe Clan as the successor to conclude the peace. And his brother, Nobukane became the head of Nagano Clan that was the most influential vassal of the Kanbe Clan when Tomofuji Nagano communicated secretly with the Kitabatake Clan and was banished. Besides, Nobunaga fought against the Kitabatake Clan at the battle of Okochijo Castle, Nobunaga surrounded it with his big army, finally he won the battle and he sent his second son, Nobukatsu, to be adopted into the Kitabatake Clan as the successor. Moreover, the battle between Uprising of Ikko Sect followers in Nagashima in northern part of Ise Province and Tensho Iga War were famous battles in Ise Province. It was one of the most famous story of Ieyasu Tokugawa at Sengoku Period that he passed through Iga Province when Nobunaga Oda was assassinated by Mitsuhide Akechi in Honnoji Incident in 1582. At that time, many Ninjas in Iga Province helped Ieyasu, the founder and the first Shogun of Edo Bakufu, to escape, and they served Tokugawa Clan through Edo Period.

In Edo Period, there were several clans divided into the region of Mie Prefecture to govern. Todo Clan, the descendants of Takatora Todo, one of the famous Sengoku Daimyo gained Iga Province and Matsusaka City was famous, and Basho Matsuo, the most famous poet, was born in Iga Province, and Norinaga Motoori, a famous scholar of the Japanese classics, was born in Matsusaka City.

After Meiji Restoration, the classical districts were rebuilt, and a new administrative district Mie Prefecture was created in 1882.

Mie Prefecture has a lot of natural resources and landmarks for people to visit to enjoy their leisure time. Ise Jingu, Kumano Kodo and the Ninja Town of Iga Ueno are excitingly popular and Matsusaka beef and sea foods also popular for the visitors. Mie Prefecture is very rich region for people to walk.
