Unkei, The Sculptor of Buddhist Images in Kamakura
Unkei, one of the most famous sculptor in
Kamakura Period, having carved the Deva Kings in Todaiji Temple in Nara carved some Buddhist
Images in Tokuganji Temple in
Gyotoku, Guhoji in Mama and Jokoji in Ono.
The statue of Amida Nyorai, the principle image of Tokuganji Temple is
said Masako Hojo,
Yoritomo Minamoto's wife, the First Shogun of
Kamakura Bakufu, ordered
Unkei to carve it, and
Ieyasu Tokugawa, the First Shogun of
Edo Bakufu presented it to his daughter in law, the princess Go. Finally, it was
donated to Tokuganji Temple when the princess passed away. And Tokuganji
Temple has one more his work, the statue of Yama King.And the Deva Kings
standing both sides of its Niomon Gates said to be carved by Unkei. And
Chichi Nashi Niozo (the statue of a Deva King without a breast) has a story
that Unkei had carved it. But some said it was carved in
Edo period.
Tokuganji, Guhoji and Jokoji Temple dedicating
Unkei's works have long
