A Walk on Yoritomo Minamoto in Ichikawa City
Yoritomo Minamoto was the founder of
Kamakura Bakufu. There are several noted places related to him in Ichikawa city.
Azuma Kagami the legal history book of Yoritomo Minamoto and Kamakura Bakufu
describes that he visited the provincial capital of Shimousa in April 17th
of 1180 ( the capital at that time was in Ichikawa city) since he would
make another attempt to fight against
Taira clan in Kyoto after he had lost the battle at Ishibashiyama. Then there are
several stories of Yoritomo visiting some places in Ichikawa city. The
stone Yoritomo Minamoto's horse held on when he came to pray in Katsushika
Hachimangu Shrine. In Shirahata Jinja Shirine, a stone tablet scribing
Sodekake no Matsu (a pine tree hanging a sleeve) having story that Yoritomo
would also hang his sleeve on remains. And Yoritomo encamped Shirahata
Jinja Shrine and Shirahata Tenjinsha Shrine, so they named 'Shirahata (white
flags)' that Yoritomo's banner was. The area name 'Onigoe' was came from
a tanka poem that Yoritomo's retainer Tanenori To created. And legends
say that an old Udon shop 'Sasaya Udonten' in Gyotoku was named by Yoritomo.
