Mizumoto Sakura Tsusumi |the bank with cherry blossoms
Mizumoto Sakura Tsusumi that is a bank along Mizumoto Park is one of the
most popular viewing spots of cherry blossoms in
Katsushikaku,
Tokyo. About 600 cherry trees are planted along the 3,500 meters long pedestrian
road running on the bank by the southern side of the park. The road actually
on higher level on both Mizumoto Park and the road for vehicles, these
shows the road runs on the bank. Originally, the bank was along a small
canal called Koaigawa River connecting
Edogawa and Obagawa River, later it became a reservoir called Koaii that lays on the center of the park now. This reservoir and bank were built by
Yoshimune Tokuawa, the 8th Shogun of
Edo Bakufu. Yoshimune also planted cherry trees on the banks along Sumidagawa River
since people loved seeing cherry blossoms and they could walk on them,
as a result, they stepped on the banks and soils in the banks were strengthened.
The cherry trees on Mizumoto Sakura Tsutsumi might be planted as the same
reason. Now old bank built in
Edo period remains in Mizumoto Sakura Tsutsumi Nature Conservation Area in the western
part of the bank.
Mizumoto Sakura Tsutsumi is a wonderful spot where visitors could see beautiful
cherry blossoms on about 600 cherry trees with the nature in Mizumoto Park.
