The area where the grand head temple of Nichiren Shu Sect, Nakayama Hokekyoji
Temple stands is sometimes called '
Nichiren's Town' since there are many
temples belonging to Nichiren Shu in Ichikawa city, and Nichiren, the founder
of the sect had visited Nakayama and Wakamiya several times. Moreover,
these temples have some stories and legends connecting with
Nichiren.
When Nichiren had suffered persecution at Matsubagaya in Kamakura in 1260, he came to Wakamiya counting on Jonin Toki's support. That is now Nakayama Okunoin Temple standing. Then, Jonin Toki and his co-workers, Noriakira Ota, Norinobu Soya and so on believed in him, and some legends connecting with his preach were born. Myoshoji Temple in Kitakata konwn as the sacred land of Cherry Trees has the legends of an incarnation of a white snake named Myosho and the seven sutras' mounds. Anrakuji in Houme has the legend of the Princess Tokiwai is the first nun of Nichiren Sect. They are deeply connected with his preach. And Shogyoji Temple in Kashiwai known as 'the scared place of the drums' has some stories with Nichiren. In addition, the stone tablet scribed a tanka poem created by Nichiren is standing beside Mama no Tsugihashi Bridge on the approach road to Mamasan Guhoji Temple.
